Actor and former Disney board member Sidney Poitier dies aged 94.

Academy Award winning Bahamian actor Sidney Poitier KBE has died at the age of 94.

Winner of the best actor Oscar in 1964 for “Lilies of the Field”, his movies included “To Sir, With Love”, “In the Heat of the Night,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”.

He also received a Grammy Award, and Golden Globe Awards and a British Academy Film Award. Poitier was knighted by the Queen in 1974.

From 1995 to 2003, Poitier served as a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company.

Former Disney CEO Robert Iger said “Sidney Poitier was the most dignified man I’ve ever met. Towering, gentle, passionate, bold, kind and altogether special.”

One of the last surviving major stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, Poitier served as Bahamian Ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007.

Poitier died on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles, according to Latrae Rahming, the director communications for the Prime Minister of Bahamas.
