Joël Howa sentenced to five years for 2003 Disneyland Paris armed robbery

Joël Howa was sentenced on Monday (7 September 2015) to five years in prison for his part in an  armed robbery that took place more than ten years ago at Disneyland Paris.

Howa aged 32 of Noisy-le-Grand (Seine-Saint-Denis) carried out an armed robbery of the Pizza Planet restaurant in Disneyland Paris in the evening of 8 November 2003.  Equipped with a handgun Howa and an unknown accomplice attacked, bound and gagged two Cast Members and stole €11,000.

Joël Howa had worked the previous year at the resort and noticed a gap in the resorts cash handling security measures.

According to Xavier Autain, counsel for Disneyland Paris, “He (Joël Howa) brought fear into the park, where there was none. At the time, there was no provision in terms of security, it was the American system, we were in a kind of magical bubble. It broke the spell. “

Howa and his accomplice committed the first ever robbery inside the park which opened in 1992.  After the robbery the resorts security systems were reviewed and counselling for Cast Members who are the victims of assaults was set up.

A second robbery took place at Disneyland Paris two years later in 2005.

On February 9, 2014,  Joël Howa handed himself in at Chessy police station and explained he wanted  to ease his conscience after he himself was attacked in the summer of 2013 and he began to understand what it feels like to be a victim.

Howa  has not give the name of his accomplice in the robbery to the Police.
